The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council in the Eastern Region is taking a bold step to defend the legacy of Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, a founding father of Ghana, against alleged derogatory comments made by Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Murtala Mohammed, on the floor of Parliament.
The council, led by Osabarima Okogyeaman Apagya Fori IV, Kyebi Apapamuhene and warlord of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, is set to petition the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Friday, March 7, 2025.
According to Osabarima Apagya Fori, the council is seeking justice for the late Dr. Danquah, who was described as a “traitor” and a “CIA operative” by Muntala Mohammed.
The council views these comments as offensive and unfortunate, given Dr. Danquah’s pivotal role in Ghana’s independence struggle.
The petition is not only a call for accountability but also a demand for respect for Dr. Danquah’s legacy.
The council is urging Mohammed to retract his derogatory remarks and apologize to the people of Akyem Abuakwa, Dr. Danquah’s family, and the nation as a whole.
This move by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council is reminiscent of a similar petition filed by the Anlos against JJ Rawlings over the murder incident.
The council’s action demonstrates its commitment to protecting the dignity and legacy of its people.
The youth of Okyeman have also rallied behind the traditional council, demanding a retraction and an unqualified apology from Muntala Mohammed.
Their support underscores the widespread outrage and concern over the alleged derogatory comments.
