Ambassadorial List Pops Up

A confidential list of President John Dramani Mahama’s ambassadorial and high commissioner nominations has surfaced, causing a stir in both political and diplomatic circles.

While the leak gives insight into the individuals selected for key international postings, it also raises questions about the process behind the appointments and the political dynamics shaping Ghana’s foreign representation.

The List of Appointees

In a document officially dated April 2, 2025, from the Office of the President, which was sent to the Council of State, from where it was leaked to the public, a comprehensive list of 23 individuals nominated to represent Ghana abroad was revealed.

The nominations include a mix of political figures, academics, and professionals with experience in various sectors.

Here is a look at some of the notable names:

1. Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso
An academic giant and respected in Ghana’s educational landscape, Professor Obiri-Danso’s appointment signals an emphasis on strengthening Ghana’s ties with international academic institutions. His expertise could be critical in fostering partnerships in global education and research.

2. Sabah Zita Benson
Known for her advocacy in women’s rights and social development, Sabah Zita Benson’s nomination is seen as a step towards reinforcing Ghana’s diplomatic presence in gender and social issues on the world stage.
Zita, a former Information Minister under President Atta Mills and Ambassador to Czech Republic under Mahama’s first term is nominated to represent Ghana as the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

3. Victor Emmanuel Smith
A seasoned diplomat and former ambassador to the United Kingdom, Smith’s return to the Foreign Service is widely seen as a strategic move. His deep understanding of US-Ghana relations could help further strengthen diplomatic ties between the two nations.

4. Labik Joseph Yaani
An experienced politician and businessman with a strong international network, Yaani’s appointment reflects President Mahama’s intention to deepen Ghana’s economic and trade relationships, particularly in sectors such as investment and commerce. He was a former MP for Bunkpurugu Yunyoo

5. Benjamin Kofi Quashie
Quashie’s appointment is notable, as he has long been involved in Ghanaian political and diplomatic circles. His experience in foreign affairs positions him as a valuable asset in international negotiations and trade.

6. Kojo Bonsu
A former mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu’s diplomatic appointment is viewed as a politically strategic move. His local governance experience could be beneficial in fostering urban development partnerships across the globe. He may be going to South Africa where he had business interest.

7. Mavis Ama Frimpong
With a background in healthcare, a former Eastern Regional Minister,Mavis Ama Frimpong’s appointment is expected to push forward Ghana’s engagement with international health organizations, advancing the nation’s interests in global health diplomacy.

8. Sam Pee Yalley
As a veteran in diplomatic circles, who recently died has his name in the list.

9. Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed
A former Member of Parliament for Akwatia with strong ties to the NDC party, Jamal’s nomination is seen as another move to ensure that Ghana’s foreign representation aligns with the ruling party’s interests.
He is tipped to go to Nigeria.

10. Paul Evans Aidoo
He is a former MP for Sefwi Wiaso and Western regional minister.
The rest are Dr. Koma-Steem Jehu Appiah, Bukari Moses Mabengba, Kulsoume Sinare Baffoe, Theresah Adjei-Mensah, Prof Esi Awuah, Hammed Rashid Tunde Ali, Nii Amasah Namoale, Satirieh Dorcas Ocran, Mohammed Abubakari Manaf, Dr Felix Kumah Godwin Anebo and Captain George Kofi Nfojoh.

The rest are Dr Margaret Miewien Chebere and Prof Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh.
