A delegation of elders from the Anlo traditional area, led by the Zipuito of Anlo Duker and former Member of Parliament, Dan Kwashie Abodakpi, stormed Parliament with a petition, demanding action against a Member of Parliament who made derogatory remarks about Dr. Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings.
The MP in question referred to Dr. Rawlings, MP for Korle Klottey as a “daughter of a murderer” during a debate on a statement eulogizing J.B. Danquah.
The petition, received by the Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror on behalf of Speaker Bagbin, highlights the esteemed contributions of the former first president of the Fourth Republic, Jerry John Rawlings.
Dan Abodakpi emphasized that Ghana’s current democratic dispensation is a direct result of Rawlings’ invaluable contributions, making the derogatory remarks both unfortunate and undesirable.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Speaker Bagbin leading the charge.
In a statement on the Floor of the House, he described the MP’s conduct as “dishonorable and unbecoming” and urged the member responsible to come forward and opt for a plea bargain.
The Speaker also reminded members that while they enjoy freedom of speech, it must be exercised within the bounds of Parliamentary rules and regulations.
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, echoed Speaker Bagbin’s sentiments, urging the member responsible to come forward and face the consequences.
He assured that the majority would support the Privileges Committee in exacting maximum punishment.
The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, also expressed his desire to see the matter brought to a swift conclusion, referencing two other incidents that require resolution.
