In a shocking turn of events, Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine confirmed that he personally authorized the arrest of former Public Procurement Authority (PPA) Board Chairman, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi.
This move is part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities linked to Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s tenure as Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund (GIIF).
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was taken into custody by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on February 23, 2025, at Kawukudi, near Nima in Accra.
During questioning, he admitted that a $2 million payment had been made for work that was never completed.
Dr. Ayine emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, stating, “We’re still investigating the circumstances of the payment and those who were involved.”
This development comes on the heels of Dr. Ayine’s recent justification for withdrawing multiple high-profile cases against state officials, including Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson and former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama.
Dr. Ayine explained that the charges filed against the accused were defective and lacked merit.
Despite the Attorney General’s confirmation, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s lawyers insist he is innocent.
Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie, a member of his legal team, stated, “We are absolutely confident that Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi is innocent of whatever allegations have been made against him.”
Ken urged investigators to bring forward all evidence, saying, “Once they present their facts, we will respond accordingly.”
