The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has been on strike for two weeks, protesting the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of Births and Deaths.
In response, Dr. Abdul Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, has acknowledged receipt of CLOGSAG’s petition and expressed hope for an amicable resolution.
CLOGSAG’s concerns stem from the perceived political exposure of the appointed individual, rather than the appointment itself.
The association has been engaging with relevant stakeholders to address the issue, and the government has taken note of their concerns.
This development comes on the heels of CLOGSAG’s previous industrial action in January 2022, which was called off after the government agreed to address their demands for better conditions of service.
The association had declared an indefinite nationwide strike to press home their demands, which included a salary structure comparable to other public services.
The ongoing strike has entered its second week, and Dr. Pelpuo has urged CLOGSAG to put the petition into perspective, allowing for the strike to be called off.
The government has assured CLOGSAG that it will advise the President on any related future appointments.
However, as the standoff continues, the government and CLOGSAG are expected to engage in further discussions to find a mutually acceptable solution.
The outcome of these talks will determine the fate of the strike and the future of industrial relations in Ghana.
