‘Drop James Gardiner, Kafui Danku As National Film Authority Bosses’

A storm is brewing in Ghana’s film industry as a group of arts stakeholders, the Association of Ghanaian Creatives, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointments of Kafui Danku and James Gardiner to the National Film Authority (NFA).

The petition, which has gained traction, cites the duo’s lack of competence in handling the positions as the reason for the call for revocation.

Kafui Danku has been appointed as the Executive Secretary of the NFA, with James Gardiner serving as her Deputy.
However, the Association of Ghanaian Creatives argues that neither of them possesses the industry experience or expertise required to lead the NFA.

The group claims that their backgrounds, limited to low-budget productions and social media branding, fall short of the strategic vision needed to navigate Ghana’s film sector toward growth.

The petitioners have suggested alternative candidates for the positions, including George Bosompin, Jim Awindor, Akofa Edjeani Asiedu, Professor Linus Abraham, Akosua Abdallah, and Ms. Nicole Amarteifio.
These individuals are touted as having the necessary expertise and experience to lead the NFA effectively.

The controversy surrounding the appointments has sparked debate within the film industry, with some questioning the criteria used to select Kafui Danku and James Gardiner for the roles.

The National Film Authority is a critical institution responsible for promoting the development of the film industry in Ghana, and its leadership requires individuals with a deep understanding of the sector.

The petitioners have expressed concern that the appointment of underqualified individuals to lead the NFA may signal a departure from excellence, particularly when compared to the legacy of Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, a Harvard-trained industry leader who previously headed the NFA.

Yaa Asante was credited with bringing groundbreaking initiatives to the NFA and successfully brokering distribution deals with major players like MTN.
