Gas Explosion Kills Student In Koforidua

A tragic gas explosion in house in Oyoko, a suburb of Koforidua in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region, has left one person dead and two others critically injured.

The explosion occurred in the early hours of Sunday, March 31, 2025, when a gas leak ignited fire after a young woman, identified as Asante Rose, attempted to locate the source of the leak.

Asante Rose, a Purchasing and Supply student of the Koforidua Technical University, was fatally injured when she accidentally ignited a match while investigating the gas leak in the kitchen.

The resulting explosion severely burnt her and two others who were present at the scene: her younger brother and a neighbour.

Unfortunately, Rose succumbed to her injuries shortly after being rushed to the Koforidua Central Hospital.

The two surviving victims, a young boy and a lady, are currently battling for their lives at the Eastern Regional Hospital after sustaining severe burns in the blast.

Sources indicate that the gas leak had been present in the kitchen for some time, but it was not until Rose attempted to address the issue that the tragedy occurred.

The explosion has left the local community in shock, and authorities were quick to respond.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were called to the scene to manage the situation and help contain the fire.

The police have also launched an investigation into the cause of the incident, while officials work to determine whether there were any lapses in safety procedures.

The Koforidua Technical University, where Rose was a student, had been notified about the unfortunate incident, although the institution has yet to release an official statement regarding her death.
