IGP Interdicts 4 Cops For Arresting Judge

In a move that has sparked widespread debate, Ghana’s Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has ordered the detention of four police officers for arresting a judge for a road traffic incident.

The officers, Inspector Godwin Dey, Inspector Francis Adjei, Sergeant Daasebre Oti Boateng, and Corporal Jonah Adjubulisah, were tasked with routine road discipline duty when they stopped the vehicle of Judge Angela Attachi, in December 2024.

The Incident

According to eyewitnesses, the judge was driving carelessly when the officers attempted to stop her.

However, she refused to halt and drove off, prompting the officers to follow her vehicle until it was blocked by another car.

The judge then abandoned her vehicle in the middle of the road and left in another car.

The officers subsequently towed the vehicle to the Adenta Police station to press charges.

Senior Officer Intervention

However, senior officers intervened, citing the judge’s position and demanding that the matter be dropped.

The officers were initially told to release the judge’s vehicle and cancel the charges.

But in an unexpected turn of events, the officers were called to the Police headquarters last week to report to the CID headquarters to write their statements regarding the arrest.

Detention of Officers

After submitting their statements, the officers were detained on orders from the top brass.

Sources close to the investigation revealed that only the Inspector-General of Police can order their release.

This move has raised questions about the rule of law and the accountability of public officials.
