John Ntim Fordjour Raises Alarm Over Lavish Spending By NDC Appointees Amid Economic Hardship

By Daniel Bampoe

In a blistering critique posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Member of Parliament for Assin South and Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee in Parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has accused appointees of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of living lavishly at the expense of suffering Ghanaians—barely four months into their return to power.

His post, which has since gone viral, points to what he describes as a “reckless, arrogant, and opulent” display of unexplained wealth by government officials, amid worsening economic conditions faced by ordinary citizens.

Allegations of Rapid Wealth Accumulation

Rev. Fordjour’s comments come on the back of a scandal involving Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC and Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, who was recently captured on video spraying large amounts of U.S. dollars on the controversial evangelist, Nana Agradaa, during a funeral event.

“This is happening in just 120 days,” Fordjour wrote.

“They are arrogantly and opulently sharing dollars in public, having stashed millions of cocaine dollars under their beds. These are people who have never worked a day in their lives in any company.”

He further alleged that NDC appointees have rapidly acquired ultra-luxury items, including $450,000 Range Rover Autobiography vehicles, and were brandishing “ultra-expensive phones and tablets on set,” claiming their cost could “build classroom blocks” in underserved communities.

A Dig at the NDC’s Code of Conduct

Rev. Fordjour questioned the effectiveness of President John Dramani Mahama’s recently launched Code of Conduct for Public Appointees, which was intended to serve as a moral compass for public servants and curb ostentatious behavior and corruption.

“Yet all these are being done on the back of a toothless Code of Conduct which cannot and will not be applied,” he declared, implying that the document is merely symbolic and lacks the power to hold appointees accountable.

Criticism of Grassroots Supporters

In a sharp rebuke of NDC grassroots supporters, Rev. Fordjour criticized what he called the blind defense of government appointees by party fanatics, many of whom are struggling with power outages (Dumsor) and rising costs of living.

“Hungry NDC fanatics, sleeping in Dumsor heat and enduring rising cost of living in just 120 days, will be spewing nonfa [nonsense] on social media platforms with their 1ghc data,” he wrote.

“You worked, they’re chopping! You must demand accountability from your opulent appointees.”

GoldBOD and Public Concerns

Sammy Gyamfi’s controversial video has also raised questions about the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBOD), a newly created entity under his leadership.

GoldBOD is backed by $279 million in government funds, intended to centralize the buying and exporting of gold as a means of boosting Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves.

Critics have accused the board of attempting to monopolize the gold trade, while Gyamfi’s role as both CEO of GoldBOD and MD of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) has sparked concerns about conflict of interest and lack of oversight.

The video of him showering Agradaa with dollars has intensified public scrutiny, with some calling for a CHRAJ probe and a forensic audit into the source of his wealth.

Meanwhile, calls have emerged for Agradaa to pay tax on the large gift, in accordance with Ghanaian law on gift taxation.

Rev. Fordjour’s remarks have amplified an already heated debate about the ethics and transparency of the new NDC administration.
