President John Dramani Mahama has come out in strong defence of the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, amidst opposition criticism.
The President’s endorsement of Asiama’s leadership comes at a time when the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns about Asiama’s suitability for the role, citing his past legal challenges and other alleged malpractices.
Johnson Asiama’s appointment has been met with skepticism by the NPP, which has questioned his involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank.
The opposition party has argued that Johnson Asiama’s legal history makes him unfit for the role of BoG Governor, a position that demands impeccable integrity and trustworthiness.
However, President Mahama has dismissed these concerns, emphasizing the need for experienced and decisive leadership to address the challenges facing Ghana’s financial sector.
“Ghana’s financial sector is in crisis, and the task ahead demands experience, foresight, and decisive leadership,” Mahama said during the swearing-in ceremony of Asiama and Dr. Zakari Mumuni as First Deputy Governor of the BoG.
President John Mahama expressed confidence in Asiama’s ability to restore trust and stability at the BoG, citing his experience and expertise in the financial sector.
“With Dr. Asiama heading the Bank of Ghana, I am confident that we will rebuild trust in the institution, we will restore stability, and put our economy back on the path of sustained growth,” John Mahama said.
The opposition NPP has also raised concerns about the legality of Johnson Asiama’s appointment, with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin questioning the constitutionality of the appointment.
However, President John Mahama’s defence of Asiama’s appointment suggests that the government is confident in its decision.
The controversy surrounding Asiama’s appointment has sparked a heated debate about the role of the BoG in promoting economic stability and the need for greater transparency and accountability in the bank’s operations.
