Mahama Endorses Bawumia’s Digitalization Agenda

President John Dramani Mahama has thrown his support behind Ghana’s ongoing digitalization agenda, advocating for young people to embrace the tools and skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy.

Speaking at the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations at Black Star Square on March 31, President Mahama reinforced the idea that digital transformation, discipline, and education are essential for the country’s future growth and the empowerment of its youth.

During the event, which marked the end of Ramadan and brought together Muslims across Ghana for a day of prayer and thanksgiving, President Mahama highlighted the growing importance of technology in shaping the future.

His call came in the wake of an ambitious digital agenda introduced by Ghana’s immediate past Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a key figure behind the government’s push towards digitalization in recent years.

In his address, Mahama urged young Ghanaians to equip themselves with critical skills such as coding, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and entrepreneurship, which have become essential in today’s digital economy.

He reiterated the urgency of adapting to a digital-first world and noted that Ghana’s youth must embrace these skills to remain competitive both locally and internationally.

“To our young people, I say Ghana’s future is in your hands. In this era of digital transformation and global economic competition, our youth must equip themselves with the knowledge, discipline, and skills needed to thrive. Our youth are the ones who will shape the country’s destiny,” Mahama said in his speech, stressing that a strong digital foundation is necessary for economic prosperity.

Mahama’s support for the digitalization agenda, which was first championed by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during his tenure as Vice President, underscores a growing consensus on the importance of technology in driving Ghana’s development.

Dr. Bawumia played a significant role in promoting the digitalization of government services and infrastructure, which includes initiatives like mobile money interoperability, the digital address system, and the paperless port system.
These reforms have helped streamline public services, making them more accessible and efficient.

President Mahama, acknowledging the positive strides made under Bawumia’s leadership, emphasized that education should go hand-in-hand with digital innovation.

“Allow your faith to guide you but also allow your education and hard work to serve as the tools that empower you to build a brighter future. It is important to be a faithful Muslim, but it is also important to be an educated Muslim,” John Mahama noted.

President further expressed his belief that the government must continue to create an enabling environment for youth empowerment.

“As leaders, we will do our part to create the enabling environment that gives young people the opportunities they deserve. It is my wish that our youth in the Muslim communities will take advantage of these opportunities,” Mahama stated, aligning his views with Bawumia’s ongoing efforts to make digital tools and skills more accessible to young people across the country.
