President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Ghana’s governance framework by identifying key areas that require constitutional amendments.
These areas include the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), the emoluments of Article 71 officeholders, and the appointment of ministers from Parliament.
In a significant move, President Mahama hosted members of the Constitution Review Committee, chaired by Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, at its maiden stakeholder engagement.
The committee sought the President’s thoughts on the review of the constitution and areas he believed required amendment.
This engagement marks the beginning of a comprehensive review process aimed at enhancing Ghana’s democratic governance.
The Constitution Review Committee was established by President Mahama with a clear mandate to review the 1992 Constitution and make recommendations for amendments.
The committee’s composition is notable for its expertise, dedication to national service, and commitment to good governance.
The committee is expected to deliver its recommendations within five months for consideration by the government.
President Mahama’s emphasis on constitutional reforms is not new.
In his previous statement commemorating Ghana’s Constitution Day, he reiterated his commitment to continuing the constitutional review process, focusing on strengthening governance institutions, protecting citizens’ rights, and fighting corruption.
