The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been embroiled in a controversy over the appointment of John Ayiku Ocansey as its Acting Deputy Managing Director.
In a surprising turn of events, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor has reversed Ocansey’s appointment just days after announcing it citing error as the reason for the reversal.
John Ocansey, an NDC activist at the Weija Gbawe constituency having served as constituency Treasurer was a manager at Accra East office of the company before the announcement.
The initial appointment letter, dated March 17, 2025, introduced Ocansey as the new Acting Deputy Managing Director, citing his 28 years of experience with the ECG and his impressive educational background, which includes degrees from the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, and Mountcrest University College.
John Ocansey’s political affiliations were also highlighted, noting his role as a two-term Constituency Treasurer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Weija-Gbawe Constituency.
However, Ocansey’s appointment created controversy in the establishment with ECG staff raising concern about the appropriateness of his appointment since he’s not yet a director to qualify for the deputy managing director position.
In a statement, the Minister called on all ECG workers to support John Ocansey for the collective success of the company.
However, in a shocking reversal, the Energy Minister withdrew Ocansey’s appointment just days later, citing that the initial letter was “inadvertently written”.
The withdrawal letter, dated March 20, 2025, superseded the earlier appointment letter, leaving the status of John Ocansey’s appointment uncertain.
This sudden turn of events has raised questions about the motivations behind John Ocansey’s appointment and subsequent withdrawal.
