In a subtle yet scathing critique, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin took on the Majority MPs over their attendance record in Parliament.
Speaking on the floor of the House after the Minister of Finance, Ato Forson, presented the budget, Afenyo-Markin expressed his surprise at the sudden interest of the Majority of MPs in attending Parliament.
“Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I believe that since 7th January, this is the first time the majority is entering this chamber,” Afenyo-Markin stated, his voice laced with a hint of sarcasm.
“So, we can stay, we can do some two more hours of comments before we move the motion for adjournment.”
He added, “Mr. Speaker, this is the first time we are having a full house, so Mr. Speaker, let’s give them the opportunity to comment, especially those who are not regular in this chamber.”
Afenyo-Markin’s comments were a veiled criticism of the Majority MPs’ attendance record, implying that they were not taking their duties seriously.
The Majority NDC MPs have been absenting themselves in the chamber on the misplaced assumption that they are lobbying for positions in government.
His remarks were made before he motioned for the adjournment of proceedings, which was granted by the Speaker.
The Minority Leader’s swipe at the Majority MPs is not an isolated incident.
There have been concerns raised about the attendance record of some MPs, with some accusing them of not taking their duties seriously.
Afenyo-Markin’s comments will likely add fuel to the fire, highlighting the need for MPs to be more diligent in attending Parliament.
But the speaker quickly urged him to be guided by the Parliamentary rules.
The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga also noted that they will be available in their numbers when the need arise.
