The Ofankor to Nsawam Highway, a critical route connecting Accra to Kumasi and other parts of the country, has turned into a nightmare for drivers.
The road, which is currently under construction, has been taken over by muddy and dusty conditions, causing cars to get stuck and traffic to build up. The chaos was exacerbated by last night’s heavy downpour, which left the road impassable.
The situation is particularly dire between Sapeiman and Amasaman, where huge traffic jams have formed due to the rains.
The Pobiman stretch to Pokause is also affected, with dust taking over the abandoned construction site.
The contractor’s absence has only added to the woes of drivers, who are struggling to navigate the treacherous terrain.
The Ofankor-Nsawam road project, which began in September 2022, was initially expected to be completed within 24 months.
However, the project has been plagued by delays, with the Ministry of Roads and Highways attributing the setbacks to ongoing court cases.
Over 80 court cases are currently pending, many of which involve property owners challenging demolitions or seeking compensation.
The $350 million project aims to improve transportation along the Accra-Kumasi highway, one of the busiest road networks in Ghana.
The expansion and rehabilitation of the road are expected to ease traffic congestion, enhance trade and commerce, and provide safer and more efficient transportation for commuters.
As the situation on the Ofankor-Nsawam Highway continues to deteriorate, drivers are calling on the government to expedite the resolution of the court cases and allow construction to resume fully.
