National Security Stops Ghana Weightlifting Federation Elections

In a shocking turn of events, the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) elections were brought to an abrupt halt by National Security operatives.

The elections, which were scheduled to take place on March 8, 2025, at the Media Center of the Accra Sports Stadium, were intended to elect new executives to shape the future of weightlifting in Ghana.

The position of president was being contested by two prominent figures: Jerry Ahmed Shuaib, the NPP MP for Weija-Gbawe, and Michael Nii Yarboi, a former NDC parliamentary aspirant for Odododiodioo Constituency.

Other positions up for grabs included Vice-President, Secretary-General, Treasurer, and three Ordinary Executive Members.

The GWF had announced the Elective Congress on February 16, 2025, urging all members to actively participate in the election process.

The federation’s Secretary-General, Ben Addy, had emphasized the importance of members involvement in shaping the future of weightlifting in Ghana.

The sudden interruption of the elections by National Security operatives has raised questions about the reasons behind the halt.

As the weightlifting community in Ghana awaits clarification on the matter, the future of the sport remains uncertain.
