Tensions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Talensi Constituency of the Upper East Region boiled over in the early hours of Saturday, April 5, 2025 when the party’s constituency office was set ablaze following controversy over the nomination of a new District Chief Executive (DCE).
The arson attack occurred around 2:30a.m., shortly after the announcement of John Millim Naabwomya as the party’s official nominee for the DCE position.
Eyewitnesses report that the fire engulfed the facility rapidly, reducing documents and party property to ashes.
No casualties were reported, but the incident has left the local party structure in disarray.
Naabwomya’s selection has become a lightning rod for discontent among sections of the NDC in Talensi.
Party insiders say opposition to his nomination has been simmering for months, with accusations that his appointment was not based on grassroots consultation but rather on political favouritism.
Critics argue that Naabwomya’s close ties to the Paramount Chief of Talensi, Tongraan Nanlebegtang Kugbilsong, played a significant role in his nomination.
Many party supporters allege that the decision reflects elite influence rather than popular support.
A formal petition was submitted to the party’s Upper East Regional leadership in January 2025, calling for the rejection of his candidacy, citing concerns over legitimacy and unity.
Adding to the controversy are allegations linking Naabwomya to Chinese mining interests in the area.
Residents and community activists claim that his relationships with foreign mining companies may compromise his ability to prioritize local concerns.
“We fear he may act in the interest of Chinese miners, not the people,” a resident, speaking on condition of anonymity told the media.
Though investigations are ongoing, the perpetrators behind the arson attack remain unidentified.
