In a candid conversation on the “I Said What I Said” podcast, Nigerian actress and media personality Kiekie opened up about the societal expectations placed on married women, particularly regarding their fashion choices.
Kiekie shared her personal experience of receiving unsolicited comments about her dressing style after getting married, with people suggesting that she didn’t “dress like a married woman”.
Curious about the notion of a dress code for married women, Kiekie took to Google and was surprised to find no clear guidelines on what constitutes appropriate attire for married women.
This experience led her to highlight the societal norms that often dictate women’s appearances and behaviors, emphasizing the need for self-determination and individuality.
As a strong advocate for women’s empowerment, Kiekie stressed the importance of women taking charge of their own lives and fighting for their dreams.
“I am the one who should fight for my dreams and set out to achieve what I want to achieve. Not that I’ll be using someone as a backup plan,” she asserted, emphasizing the need for women to be proactive in pursuing their goals.
Kiekie also addressed the need for a shift in mindset among women, encouraging them to take ownership of their lives and not rely on others for change.
“We have a long way to go because the main thing is that women themselves need to be reoriented and get it straight. Because what you don’t have, you can’t give. You can’t expect things to come from men. It is from us, the women, that the change will come,” she said, calling for women to take a more proactive role in driving change.
