The Opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to deliver a revised version of the State of the Nation Address, following what they deem as a selective and inaccurate account presented by President John Dramani Mahama on February 27, 2025 during his state of the nation address.
According to a statement signed by NPP National Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the party will present the “True State of the Nation Address” on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
This move is aimed at providing Ghanaians with a factual and objective account of the nation’s condition, which the NPP claims was omitted or misrepresented in Mahama’s address.
The NPP statement highlights several critical national issues that were allegedly overlooked in Mahama’s address, including deteriorating power supply, security challenges, rising illegal mining and violence, and an employment crisis.
“In just a few weeks under his administration, alarming developments have surfaced,” the statement reads.
Specifically, the NPP notes that Ghanaians are experiencing worsening electricity instability, threatening businesses and livelihoods.
Additionally, the party claims that national security has declined, particularly in the northern regions, heightening concerns over public safety.
The NPP also expresses concern over the resurgence of illegal mining, accompanied by violent incidents in Obuasi, which poses severe environmental and security risks.
Furthermore, the party criticizes the government’s mass cancellation of public sector recruitments and appointments, exacerbating unemployment and deepening economic uncertainty.
The NPP’s decision to present a revised State of the Nation Address is rooted in their belief that Mahama’s address fell short of its constitutional mandate under Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
“The State of the Nation Address is intended to provide an honest and comprehensive update on the state of affairs,” the NPP statement reads.
In light of this, the NPP, through its leadership in Parliament, led by Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin, will present the True State of the Nation Address to offer Ghanaians a factual and objective account of the nation’s condition.
“We remain committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and responsible governance,” the NPP statement concludes.
