Ofie Market 2.0: Sammi Awuku Dreams Big

By Daniel Bampoe

The Ofie Market, an initiative that has captured the hearts of the Akuapem North constituents in the Eastern Region, marked a remarkable milestone on April 26, 2025, as its second edition—dubbed “Ofie Market 2.0″—surpassed expectations with an even bigger crowd, greater energy, and a vibrant display of community spirit, despite heavy rains.

Held once again at the Amanokrom Community Centre Park, the second edition of Ofie Market witnessed a larger turnout compared to the already impressive maiden edition held earlier this month.

Residents from far and near, including neighboring towns and visitors from Accra, braved the rains to shop, socialize, and support local farmers and traders, demonstrating a deepening loyalty to the Ofie Market vision.

Community Needs

The Ofie Market was conceptualized in 2024 as part of Sammi Awuku’s campaign promises when he ran for Member of Parliament for Akuapem North.

Deeply aware of the persistent challenges faced by local farmers—especially post-harvest losses and the reliance on middlemen to reach buyers— Sammi Awuku envisioned a direct farm-to-market pathway.

His goal was not only to reduce wastage but also to ensure that farmers earned fairer returns on their produce, while consumers gained access to fresh, organic foods at affordable prices.

In March 2025, the dream became reality when the first edition of Ofie Market was launched.

It turned the otherwise quiet Amanokrom Community Centre into a bustling hub of trade and culture.

More than 500 farmers and 300 market queens committed to the project from its inception, signaling a strong belief in the initiative’s sustainability.

Radiant Second Edition

Ofie Market 2.0 demonstrated the growing strength of this grassroots movement.

Not even the unexpected downpour could dampen the enthusiasm of the traders or the shoppers.

Instead, the rain seemed to symbolize a fresh blessing for the project, with many participants describing the day as both “wet and wonderful.”

Stalls brimmed with colorful displays of fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, and traditional staples.

Buyers thronged the grounds, seeking farm-fresh deals and delighting in the festive atmosphere.

Traders, many of whom traveled from remote parts of the constituency, offered competitive prices, making it a win-win for both sides.

Sammi Awuku expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for their unwavering support and promised even bigger surprises in the future.

“The Ofie Market is more than just a place to shop,” Awuku noted. “It is a movement to restore pride in home-grown foods and empower our farmers.”

Local chiefs and elders who graced the occasion praised the MP for keeping his promises and for reviving the agricultural economy of the region through this practical, people-centered project.

Looking Ahead: Ofie Market 3.0

Buoyed by the success of the second edition, organizers have already set sights on an even bigger third edition.

Plans are underway to expand the market space, introduce new product lines, and attract partnerships that will offer more value to farmers and consumers alike.
