Otumfuo Sacks Chief Over Galamsey

In a bold move to crack down on illegal mining, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has destooled Nana Kusi Baaye II, the chief of Ohwim in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

The chief’s removal from office was prompted by multiple allegations of misconduct, including his involvement in galamsey (illegal mining) activities.

Nana Kusi Baaye II had been accused of illegally mining on land that had been reserved for a solar project.

The chief’s actions were seen as a blatant disregard for the law and the environment, and his involvement in galamsey activities was deemed unacceptable.

The Asantehene’s decision to destool the chief was made after a thorough investigation by the Kumasi Traditional Council, which uncovered several offenses committed by Nana Kusi Baaye II during his 16-year reign.

The allegations included the desecration of the Great Oath, extortion, and illegal sale of lands.

The chief’s sister, Akosua Nyame, also testified against him, recounting how he had dismissed the authority of the Great Oath and illegally sold cemetery lands meant for royals and chiefs.

The chief’s contemptuous remark, “If the Great Oath has legs, let it come and arrest me,” was seen as a clear indication of his disregard for the traditions and laws of the Ashanti Kingdom.
