Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is currently in the United Kingdom, resting on medical advice after suffering a health scare two weeks ago, government officials have confirmed.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, April 8, addressed growing public concern about the Vice President’s health and absence from the political scene.
“She is currently in good health and taking a short rest as advised by her doctors,” Kwakye Ofosu assured. “She’s cooling off in London now,” Kwakye Ofosu remarked lightheartedly during his interview, “but she’ll be back soon.”
“In short order, she should be back to her duties. She is in the United Kingdom as I speak.
“She’s cooling off in London now,” he remarked lightheartedly during his interview.
His comments come days after Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also attempted to calm anxieties by insisting that the Vice President is “doing well and recovering steadily.”
Behind the scenes, however, a clearer picture is emerging of a high-level, carefully managed medical episode.
The 72-year-old Vice President was rushed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Friday, March 28, after falling ill shortly after attending a public iftar event with Muslim women in Accra.
According to senior officials, her condition—believed to be heart-related—was serious enough to necessitate immediate airlifting for abroad. She was subsequently flown to London for emergency treatment, although the specific facility and nature of her condition have not been officially disclosed.
With her health reportedly stabilizing, the government is now preparing for her return home. But in a departure from standard protocol, the Vice President is not expected to resume duties from the Jubilee House immediately.
Sources within the Presidency indicate that upon her return, Professor Opoku-Agyemang will be based at a “Safe House” opposite Asomdwe Park, where President Atta Mills body was interred near the historic Osu Castle.
“This is to prevent her from engaging in strenuous public activity or facing undue pressure during this delicate recovery phase,” a senior official at the Jubilee House explained.
“Her recovery is going well, but at her age, every measure must be taken to ensure full recuperation.”
The Osu Castle Safe House, has reportedly been refurbished to accommodate her temporary office and lodging. The arrangement allows her to perform essential duties remotely while staying under tight medical and security supervision.
“She is expected to resume limited official duties during her three-week medical leave,” the source added, “working from the Osu Castle Safe House while remaining out of the public spotlight.”
