11 Chinese Busted Over ECG Missing Containers

In a significant breakthrough14, suspects including 11 Chinese nationals have been arrested in connection with the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers saga.

The arrests were made by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service at Dongfang Manufacturing Company Yard and Ponlok, both located around Shai Hills.

Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai confirmed that 11 of the suspects have identified themselves as Chinese nationals, while the remaining three are Ghanaians.

“We believe this is an organized group, and the police are actively working to apprehend more members,” Justice Srem-Sai stated.

He said all the suspects have been granted bail while investigations continue.

However, as a precaution, the police have confiscated their passports to prevent them from leaving the country and have asked them to provide sureties who can ensure their availability for further investigations.

According to Justice Srem-Sai, “The police officers have admitted the suspects to police bail because we are mindful of the 48-hour limit for detention.”

He emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration remains committed to recovering stolen state assets while upholding human rights.

The ECG missing containers scandal has exposed significant vulnerabilities within the country’s procurement and supply chain management systems.

An investigation revealed that 1,347 ECG containers have vanished from Tema Port, exposing GH₵1.5 billion in liabilities.

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has vowed to take immediate action, citing procurement lapses and mismanagement.

“The over 1,300 containers cannot vanish into thin air. We will work with the A-G and the Police to ensure those responsible are held accountable and that the missing containers or their monetary value are retrieved,” he asserted.

Justice Srem-Sai urged citizens to cooperate with investigators, emphasizing that national interest is at stake.

“Anyone with useful information should come forward and assist the authorities in bringing this matter to a conclusion,” he said.
