7 Soldiers Arrested For Assaulting Civilians In Kumasi

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that seven military personnel are under investigation following allegations of assaulting three civilians in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital on March 28, 2025.

The incident reportedly involved three officers and four soldiers, who are accused of apprehending and assaulting the civilians for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from another individual.

The Military High Command issued a statement on Tuesday, April 2, 2025, detailing the situation and confirming that the victims sustained various degrees of injury.

The Ghana Armed Forces has promised a thorough investigation into the matter, with both the Military Police and the Ashanti Regional Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) actively involved in the probe.

“The attention of the Military High Command has been drawn to an incident that is alleged to have taken place in Kumasi on Friday 28 March 2025. Seven military personnel, made up of three officers and four soldiers, are alleged to have arrested and assaulted three civilians for stealing a mobile phone belonging to another civilian. The civilians are alleged to have suffered varied degrees of injuries,” the statement read.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the military officers and soldiers involved in the alleged assault have been placed under closed arrest.

The Military High Command assured the public that any personnel found guilty of wrongdoing would face appropriate legal consequences.

“The Military Police and the Ashanti Regional Police CID are investigating the case. The officers and the soldiers have been placed under closed arrest while the investigation continues,” the statement further clarified.

The Ghana Armed Forces reiterated its commitment to upholding the law and maintaining discipline within its ranks.

The statement further urged the families and friends of the affected civilians to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed to ensure justice is served.

“We wish to assure all that anyone found culpable would be dealt with according to the law,” said Brigadier General E Aggrey-Quashie, the Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces.
