A disturbing case of alleged military brutality has gripped the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, following the remand of seven soldiers, including senior officers and a driver, by the Suame District Court over the alleged fatal assault of three civilians, two of whom were later found dead.
The tragic incident occurred on March 28, 2025, when the victims — Kwame Adu (alias Ogee), Kwabena Sarfo, and Christian Obiri Yeboah (popularly known as Kofi Yesu) — were reportedly picked up by the military personnel after being accused of stealing an iPhone.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts and statements from surviving victim Christian Obiri Yeboah, the civilians were forcibly taken to the 4th Infantry Battalion (4BN) barracks in Kumasi.
At the barracks, the three men were allegedly subjected to severe beatings at the hands of the soldiers.
In a horrifying turn of events, the bodies of Kwame Adu and Kwabena Sarfo were later discovered in a bush at Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi.
Their families, who had earlier reported them missing, identified their remains, which were subsequently conveyed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue by the police.
The sole survivor, Christian Obiri Yeboah, is currently receiving medical treatment and has provided a detailed account of the torture they allegedly suffered in military custody.
His statement became a crucial piece of evidence that led to the arrest and arraignment of the seven soldiers on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
During the court proceedings on Tuesday, April 8, prosecutors argued for the accused to be remanded in civilian prison custody to allow for uninterrupted investigations.
Defence lawyers, however, petitioned the court to allow the accused to be held under Military Police supervision, citing procedural and institutional grounds.
The presiding judge upheld the defence’s request, and the accused were consequently remanded into Military Police custody.
The court adjourned the case to April 22, 2025, as investigations continue.
