Motorists in the capital will experience major traffic diversions on Saturday, September 6, 2025, as parts of the city are temporarily closed to make way for the annual Millennium Marathon.
The Ghana Police Service has announced a number of routes that will be blocked off to ensure the smooth running of the event, which draws thousands of local and international participants each year.
According to a statement issued by the Police in collaboration with the organizers, Millennium Marathon Sports Limited (MMSL), the affected roads include some of the busiest arteries of Accra.
Among them are Atta Mills High Street towards Osu, Liberation Road from the 37 Military Hospital intersection into the Central Business District (CBD), Independence Avenue at the National Theatre traffic light, La Beach Road, Oxford Street in Osu, Cantonments Road, and Jawaharlal Nehru Road.
The Millennium Marathon, first held in 2015, has grown into one of Ghana’s most recognized sporting events, attracting elite runners as well as fitness enthusiasts.
With the race route cutting across central Accra, traffic disruption has become an annual challenge, prompting police to institute strict road management measures.
This year, diversions have been clearly outlined. Motorists heading from Liberation Road are advised to use the Kawokudi Road through Kanda Highway and connect to Barnes Road into the CBD, or alternatively use the Giffard Road to Osu.
Those traveling along the Atta Mills Highway are to divert through Liberia and Barnes roads, then connect to the 37 intersection to reach Osu and La.
Similarly, vehicles on Giffard Street will be rerouted through the 37 intersection, via Kawokudi, to Dr. Hilla Limann High Street and finally into the CBD.
The Police have cautioned that no vehicles will be allowed to park along the race route, and officers will be stationed at key junctions to assist with traffic management.
Motorists are therefore encouraged to plan their journeys ahead of time and make use of alternative routes.
“The cooperation of the public is key to ensuring a successful event,” the Police noted, adding that all necessary measures have been put in place to reduce inconvenience to residents and commuters.
The Millennium Marathon is expected to bring together thousands of athletes, tourists, and fitness enthusiasts, further cementing Accra’s reputation as a growing hub for international sporting events.
