The Techiman High Court has dismissed a parliamentary election petition filed by Christopher Beyere Baasongti, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Techiman South, against Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for the constituency.
The petition, filed on January 27, 2025, challenged the validity of the 2024 parliamentary election results, which declared Adjei Mensah Korsah as the winner.
However, the court ruled that the petition was invalid due to the petitioner’s failure to apply for security for costs within the stipulated 21-day period, as required by law.
According to the court, the petitioner’s failure to comply with this requirement rendered the petition invalid, and it was therefore dismissed.
The court’s ruling was based on Section 18(2) of the Representation of the People Law, 1992 (PNDCL 284).
The petition had been filed after the Electoral Commission (EC) gazetted the election results on January 7, 2025.
Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah’s lawyer, Gary Nimako Marfo, had filed a motion challenging the validity of the petition, citing the petitioner’s failure to provide security for costs.
The court’s dismissal of the petition brings an end to the dispute over the Techiman South parliamentary seat.
The NPP’s Adjei Mensah Korsah has been declared the valid winner of the election, and the NDC’s Christopher Beyere Baasongti has been left to ponder the outcome of the petition.
