Adum Market Inferno Leaves Nine Injured

The massive fire outbreak which occurred in the early hours of Friday, March 21, at Adum Market in Kumasi’s Central Business District, has left nine people injured and several shops and properties destroyed.

According to the Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Peter Tetteh, the congested nature of the market, made it challenging for firefighters to navigate the area, contributing to the rapid spread of the inferno.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, as desperate shop owners rushed to relocate their belongings to prevent further losses.

The Ashanti Regional Manager of the National Ambulance Service, Sommik Duut Millon, revealed that some victims suffered panic attacks and were rushed to nearby health facilities for medical attention.

“We attended to many casualties. In fire outbreaks, it is common for people to experience panic attacks, and those involved in firefighting efforts can also sustain injuries,” Millon explained.

“We treated about three firefighters who were injured and transported them to the Manhyia and Komfo Anokye hospitals. We also attended to victims who suffered panic attacks, with some in a traumatized state. In total, we managed about nine casualties, provided medical care, and later transferred them to the hospital”.

Fortunately, feedback from the hospitals indicates that the victims are responding well to treatment, with some already discharged.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the incident has raised concerns about the market’s congested layout and the need for improved fire safety measures.

In a related development, the Subin MP has attributed the fire outbreak to poor urban planning and politics, highlighting the need for urgent attention to address these issues.
