The prime suspect in the murder case of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, has been formally charged with abetment and murder.
Daniel Koranteng, who was arrested on March 12, 2025, made a brief appearance at the Madina District Court on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, where the charges against him were amended.
The prosecutor, led by Chief Inspector Nana Afua Bamfoa Bamfo, announced that they had withdrawn the initial charges and replaced them with new ones, including abetment and murder.
The prosecution’s case centers around the claim that Daniel Owusu Koranteng played a crucial role in the tragic death of Hussein-Suale.
According to the court proceedings, Koranteng led two unidentified individuals—currently at large—to Hussein-Suale’s home, where the journalist was killed.
The case has attracted significant public interest due to the high-profile nature of Hussein-Suale’s work as part of the Anas Aremeyaw Anas investigative team, which exposed corruption and criminal activities within Ghanaian football and beyond.
In addition to the murder charge, the prosecution revealed more details about Koranteng’s alleged involvement. It was disclosed in court that Daniel Koranteng had also been responsible for leaking Hussein-Suale’s personal photographs to Kennedy Agyapong which was shown on Net 2 Television, which reportedly played a role in the subsequent threat to his life.
The release of these images was said to have been a part of a broader campaign of intimidation against the journalist, culminating in his brutal murder.
Hussein-Suale, known for his investigative work, was shot dead on January 16, 2019, in Madina while he was traveling in his vehicle.
His killing sent shockwaves through Ghana and the international community, with many questioning whether the attack was linked to his journalistic work, particularly his exposé of corruption in the country.
At the court hearing on April 2, 2025, lawyers representing Daniel Owusu Koranteng requested bail for their client, who has been in custody since his arrest in March.
However, the presiding judge, Susan Nyarkotey, denied the bail application. Koranteng was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court on April 17, 2025, for further proceedings.
