Akwatia MP Fights Contempt Conviction

In a dramatic turn of events, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has appealed against his contempt conviction, filed at the High Court in Koforidua, Eastern Regional capital.

This development comes after Ernest Kumi was found guilty of presenting himself to be sworn in as an MP, despite an injunction prohibiting him.

The controversy surrounding Ernest Kumi’s election as MP for Akwatia began when an interim injunction was issued, barring him from taking office.

However, Ernest Kumi defied the court order and was subsequently sworn in as an MP.

This move led to his conviction for contempt, with the court withholding sentencing due to his absence.

A bench warrant was also issued for his arrest.

In response to the conviction, Ernest Kumi’s legal team has filed an appeal, challenging the High Court’s ruling.

Additionally, an application has been made to stay the execution of the bench warrant, pending the hearing of his appeal at the Appeal Court.

The Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib has also come out in support of Kumi, accusing the presiding judge of bias.

The case has sparked intense debate, with many questioning the legitimacy of Ernest Kumi’s election as MP.

The appeal and application for a stay of execution have added a new layer of complexity to the situation, as the court navigates the intricacies of the case.
