A dramatic and intense shootout broke out at the Pusiga District Police Headquarters in the Upper East Region late Tuesday night, as armed men identified by police as “Kusasi Bandits” launched a bold attack on the station and its nearby facilities.
According to police reports, the attack began around 10:35 PM on April 9, 2025, when the armed group targeted the Pusiga District, including the main charge office and residential quarters.
The assault resulted in a prolonged two-hour gun battle between the attackers and security personnel stationed at the facility.
The Police successfully repelled the attackers, but not without damage and injury.
In the aftermath of the firefight, the police station bore visible signs of the violence.
Bullet holes riddled the walls of the building, and a Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number GT 9861-19 — belonging to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in Bolgatanga — had its windscreen and windows shattered by gunfire.
The attack extended to the Pusiga ICT Center, a location temporarily housing several police officers.
During this phase of the assault, one officer, General Constable Stephen Nana Sarfo, sustained a gunshot wound to the arm.
He was swiftly evacuated to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he is receiving medical care.
The bandits also targeted a police service vehicle with registration number FPU 4139, which was parked at the ICT center.
The vehicle suffered damage from gunfire, including the deflation of one of its front tires due to pellet impacts.
The police have since declared the security situation in Pusiga as “very volatile and unpredictable,” urging heightened vigilance.
The Police remains on high alert amid fears of potential follow-up attacks or retaliatory strikes.
The Pusiga District forms part of the broader Bawku Division, a region that has witnessed intermittent tensions and clashes in recent years, often rooted in chieftaincy disputes and ethnic tensions involving the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.
Though the precise motive behind Tuesday night’s attack has yet to be officially confirmed, the identification of the assailants as Kusasi Bandits raises fresh concerns about escalating unrest in the region.
Meanwhile, the Police have launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators and restore calm to the area.
