Assembly Man Gunned Down Over Galamsey Fight

By Daniel Bampoe

The mining town of Mpatuam in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region descended into chaos on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, when violent clashes between angry youth and military men linked to mining operations left an elected Assembly Member dead.

The victim, identified as Samuel Danquah, Assembly Member for Aboabo Electoral Area, was reportedly shot dead during a confrontation between residents and armed soldiers.

Two other civilians sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds and remain in critical condition at a hospital.

Eyewitnesses say Samuel Danquah was caught in the crossfire when soldiers opened fire on protesters demanding justice for the alleged killing of a local miner the day before.

According to residents, tension began on Monday after a young miner reportedly lost his life under controversial circumstances involving security personnel attached to Asanko Gold Mines.

The youth accused the soldiers of deliberately targeting the miner and vowed not to let the matter rest.

By Tuesday morning, residents blocked major roads in and out of Mpatuam, chanting and demanding accountability from both the company and the security agencies.

“The youth were already charged because of the death that happened on Monday,” said Kwame Sakyi, Assembly Member for Mpatuam.

“In the middle of the scuffle, the soldiers started firing live bullets.

Unfortunately, Samuel Danquah was hit and later confirmed dead. Two others are battling for their lives.”

Retaliation and Escalation

Following the shooting, enraged residents retaliated by setting ablaze vehicles and properties belonging to Asanko Mines.

Thick smoke reportedly covered parts of the community as the standoff intensified, forcing businesses to shut down in fear of further clashes.

Residents insist the heavy-handed military approach is not new, describing it as part of a long-standing pattern of intimidation whenever they protest against the activities of the mining firm.

A History Of Mining Tensions In Amansie

The Amansie enclave has for years been a hotspot for violent clashes between artisanal miners, local residents, and security personnel guarding multinational mining concessions.

Military Clashes

In neighboring Manso Tontokrom, similar confrontations have repeatedly erupted, with youth accusing mining firms of exploiting their lands without bringing any tangible development to the communities.

In 2022, Tontokrom witnessed one of the bloodiest incidents, which resulted in the deaths of a resident and two security officers.
