In a bold move, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has taken up the mantle to defend the legacy of former President Jerry John Rawlings, issuing an ultimatum to the Member of Parliament (MP) responsible for the comment “daughter of a murderer.”
The comment, directed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle and daughter of the late former President, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, March 4, Bagbin described the comment as “reckless and deeply disturbing,” emphasizing that such remarks undermine the dignity and decorum of the House.
“We cannot tolerate this kind of behavior in this House,” Bagbin stated. “The integrity of this House must be maintained, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that.”
Alban Bagbin’s decision to take action has been seen as a significant move to protect the legacy of Rawlings, who played a crucial role in Ghana’s history.
The former President’s family has been subjected to various forms of attacks and insults, and Bagbin’s intervention is seen as a welcome move to put an end to such behavior.
The Speaker has given one week ultimatum to the MP responsible for the comment to own up and apologize.
Failure to comply will result in decisive action, including possible sanctions.
The Majority Leader has backed Alban Bagbin’s move, urging MPs to take responsibility for their actions.
