Divide My Constituency- Dome-Kwabenya MP Begs

Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the Member of Parliament for Dome/Kwabenya, has reignited the debate about dividing her constituency, citing its massive size and population.

With approximately 285,000 constituents, Dome/Kwabenya is one of the largest constituencies in the country, making it challenging for Faustina Akurugu to effectively serve her people.
Akurugu’s plea comes after a hard-won victory in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Her constituency, known for its strong New Patriotic Party (NPP) presence, has consistently voted for the NPP in both presidential and parliamentary elections for 20 consecutive years.

However, Elikplim Akurugu’s win was not without controversy, as she faced stiff competition from her opponents.

She believes that dividing the constituency would better serve the needs of her people.

“I prefer it is divided to the benefit of the constituents, so that they can get their fair share and have opportunities,” she stated in an interview.

Faustina Akurugu acknowledges that the decision to divide the constituency lies with the Local Government Minister and the Electoral Commission.

Nevertheless, she is determined to advocate for this change, which she believes would have a positive impact on her constituents.

The call to divide Dome/Kwabenya constituency is not new.

Former MP for the area, Sarah Adwoa Safo had also highlighted the need for development in the area, outlining a six-point development agenda during her re-election campaign in 2020.

However, Faustina Akurugu’s plea takes on a new sense of urgency, given the constituency’s rapidly growing population and the challenges that come with it.
