Elevating Ghanaian Theatre: The Impact of April Communications & Image Bureau

Ghana’s theatre industry is experiencing a renaissance, thanks to the tireless work of two powerhouse creative firms—April Communications and Image Bureau.

These two institutions have dedicated themselves to producing compelling, thought-provoking, and socially impactful stage performances that continue to push boundaries and redefine the theatre landscape in Ghana.

Having wowed audiences with Ola Rotimi’s classic, “The Gods Are Not to Blame” in December 2023 and March 2024, Professor Martin Owusu’s “The Legend of Aku Sika” and Efua T. Sutherland’s “The Marriage of Anansewaa” in June and September 2024 respectively, they are set to deliver yet another masterpiece—“Beyond The Walls” this March on 29th and 30th at 4pm and 8pm at the National Theatre!

The play, written by George Quaye and Directed by Naa Ashorkor is a gripping, emotionally charged production that takes audiences into the hidden world of female incarceration and is designed to challenge everything you thought you knew about crime, justice, and second chances.

Through their groundbreaking productions, April Communications and Image Bureau have joined many other organizations and groups that have brought the theatre back to the forefront of entertainment in Ghana.

Their past productions have delivered powerful narratives that leave audiences reflecting long after the curtain falls.

With “Beyond The Walls”, they are taking things a step further—creating a story that is both a work of art and a call to action.

“We don’t just tell stories; we create experiences that challenge perspectives,” says George Quaye, Team Lead and Creative Director at Image Bureau.

“Beyond The Walls” is more than a play—it’s a mirror reflecting society’s treatment of ex-convicts, and it demands we do better.”

If you love good theatre—theatre that makes you laugh, cry, and think—then “Beyond The Walls” is a show you cannot afford to miss.
