GES Reinstates Dismissed Teachers After Minority Intervention

In a dramatic turn of events, the Ghana Education Service (GES) under the current President John Dramani Mahama administration has ordered the reinstatement of dismissed teachers, following a fierce backlash from the Minority in Parliament.

The decision, announced in a letter dated March 5, 2025, directs all affected staff to undergo a validation process to clean up the database of recruited staff on the GES payroll.

The controversy surrounding the dismissal of teachers began when the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, called on the President John Dramani Mahama government to halt plans to dismiss nurses and teachers.

The Minority’s concerns were echoed by the directive of President John Dramani Mahama through the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah to terminate their appointments after being recruited by President Akufo-Addo administration.

In response to the backlash, the GES has established a three-member committee, comprising the Regional Human Resource Officer, Regional Internal Auditor, and Regional Accountant, to lead the validation process.

Affected staff are required to submit documents, including appointment letters, academic certificates, licensure certificates, and national service certificates, by March 14, 2025.

The GES has assured that the validation process is aimed at ensuring the integrity of the recruitment process and maintaining accurate records of staff on the payroll.

The decision to reinstate dismissed teachers is seen as a victory for the Minority, who had been vocal in their opposition to the dismissals.
