Ghana Loses GH₵4.4m To Scammers In Q1 2025

An alarming rise in online fraud has been reported by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), with Ghana losing a staggering GH₵4.4 million to scammers between January and March 2025.

This marks a significant increase from the GH₵2.4 million recorded during the same period in 2024.

The CSA has revealed that 350 cyber fraud cases have been reported so far this year, with scammers exploiting digital platforms to target unsuspecting victims.

The Authority has cautioned the public to remain vigilant against cybercriminals who take advantage of heightened commercial activity during festive seasons.

The ongoing Eid celebrations and the upcoming Easter festivities have created a fertile ground for cybercriminals to operate.

The CSA has identified three major tactics used by scammers to target victims during these periods.

These tactics include fake online shops, brand impersonation, and phishing scams.

Online Shops

Scammers create counterfeit online stores or impersonate legitimate businesses on social media, luring victims with heavily discounted prices.

Victims send money but never receive their purchases.
This tactic has been particularly effective during festive seasons when consumers are eager to take advantage of discounts and promotions.

Brand Impersonation

Scammers manipulate search engine results to display fake business listings, tricking customers into engaging with fraudulent contacts.

Victims are blocked once payment is made, and the promised goods or services are not materialized.

This tactic requires a level of sophistication and planning, highlighting the growing complexity of cybercrime in Ghana.

The CSA has advised consumers to take precautionary measures when shopping online. These measures include verifying online retailers, avoiding advance payments, being wary of too-good-to-be-true deals, and protecting personal information.

The Authority has also urged the public to report suspected cyber fraud incidents via its 24-hour helpline.
