Human Negligence, Not Faulty Boat, Caused Actor Junior Pope’s Death’

More than a year after the tragic death of Nigerian actor Junior Pope and four others in a boat accident, fresh revelations have emerged pointing to human error—not mechanical failure—as the true cause of the fatal incident.

At a stakeholders’ forum on multi-modal transportation held in Abuja over the weekend, the Managing Director of Nigeria’s National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji, stated that the drowning of the popular Nollywood actor was the result of safety violations on the part of passengers, rather than technical faults with the boat or environmental conditions.

“The real tragedy lies not in a failed engine or stormy waters, but in the willful disregard for basic safety procedures,” Oyebamiji emphasized.

He revealed that several passengers aboard the ill-fated boat had refused to wear life jackets, despite being offered them before departure.

This decision, according to NIWA, significantly contributed to the loss of lives when the vessel capsized.

“It was not mechanical failure, not impediments in the water or weather challenges, but purely a flagrant disregard for rules and regulations guiding movement on the inland waterways,” Oyebamiji noted.

He warned that such disregard for safety protocols continues to undermine national efforts to promote secure travel on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

The late Junior Pope Odonwodo was among a film crew returning from a movie shoot in April 2024.

The production, titled “Another Side of Life,” was being produced by filmmaker Adanma Luke. Tragedy struck near Cable Point at the waterside of the River Niger in Asaba, Delta State, when the boat capsized under unclear circumstances.

Initial reports had blamed the incident on poor weather or faulty equipment, but NIWA’s investigation now lays those assumptions to rest.

The forum, which brought together key players in Nigeria’s transport and aviation sectors, also featured the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the Director-General of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, the DG of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, and CEO of Air Peace, Allen Onyema.

Oyebamiji used the occasion to appeal to all passengers and transport operators to cooperate with NIWA in raising public awareness around waterway safety.

He stressed that simple decisions—such as wearing a life jacket—can be the difference between life and death.

The tragic death of Junior Pope, a father of three and widely admired actor known for his roles in both action and romantic dramas, sent shockwaves through Nollywood.
