The Attorney-General, Dominic Ayine, has openly admitted to feeling the heat from ordinary members of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, to prosecute officials from the previous administration.
However, he’s adamant that he won’t rush into court without gathering all the necessary facts and evidence.
“The issue of accountability was a central plank of His Excellency’s campaign,” Dr. Ayine explained.
“Ghanaians bought into that campaign, which is why they voted for us. Yes, I am under pressure, but not from political quarters, rather from ordinary Ghanaians.”
Dr. Ayine acknowledged that Ghanaians are eager to see action taken against those who have abused public office and looted state resources.
“Sometimes, you may have colleagues saying things are not moving as quickly as they’d like, but I’ve said I won’t rush into any matter, and the president knows that – he accepts that,” he added.
The Attorney-General also issued a stern warning to banks not to move any assets or money belonging to the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu Boahene, and his wife.
He revealed that the Financial Intelligence Centre is closely monitoring their accounts.
Dr. Ayine further disclosed that investigations have uncovered suspicious transactions involving companies linked to Adu Boahene.
“Investigations have established that money, mostly proceeds of crime, have been transmitted under suspicious circumstances through the bank accounts of these companies,” he said.
The Attorney-General emphasized that any bank officials found to be involved in moving Adu Boahene’s assets would be arrested and prosecuted.
“We are monitoring their activities closely, and we can track any movement of money on their accounts with the press of a button,” he warned.
In a related development, Dr. Ayine hinted that Adu Boahene may have acquired another citizenship using his amassed wealth.
“The suspect has two service passports, and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is investigating intelligence that he has a foreign passport,” he revealed.
