The New Juaben Table Tennis Club paid a courtesy call on Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, to congratulate her on her appointment and discuss challenges facing the club.
Led by Ernest Wiredu and Felix Adjetey Sowah, the delegation briefed the minister on the club’s contributions to sports development in the region.
“We are the hub of Ghana table tennis, with a strong track record of nurturing top talents,” said Mr. Sowah.
“Notably, we have produced a male player who secured Ghana’s first-ever Olympic qualification in the men’s team category.”
The club presented the minister with the Dedication and Valour Award, won at the 49th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards.
However, they also raised concerns about key challenges, particularly the lack of a dedicated vehicle for competitions and other essential club activities.
In response, Ms. Awatey commended the club for its achievements and assured them of her commitment to supporting table tennis development in the region.
“Every sporting activity deserves the necessary attention and investment,” she said.
“Sports play a crucial role in youth empowerment, community development, and national recognition.”
Ms. Awatey pledged to work towards creating a more supportive environment for athletes.
“I encourage you to continue nurturing young talents and positioning the Eastern Region as a stronghold for table tennis in Ghana,” she said.
“I am optimistic about working closely with relevant stakeholders to explore solutions that will enhance the club’s capacity and ensure its continued success.”
The visit reaffirmed the minister’s dedication to promoting sports across the region and strengthening support for athletes.
