London Mayor Visits Accra

London Mayor Sadiq Khan will touch down in Accra later this month as part of a historic multi-city African trade mission designed to deepen economic, diplomatic, and cultural ties between the United Kingdom and Africa.

The initiative marks the first-ever official African visit by a sitting London Mayor, underscoring the UK capital’s strategic pivot towards broader global engagement post-Brexit.

The trade delegation, announced recently, will include visits to four key African cities: Lagos (Nigeria), Accra (Ghana), Johannesburg and Cape Town (South Africa).

These cities were specifically selected due to their significance as economic powerhouses and cultural hubs on the continent.

According to officials at London’s City Hall, the mission’s objective is to “celebrate African contributions to London’s diversity and economy while seeking new commercial partnerships in business, fintech, technology, green innovation, education, and the creative sectors.”

The visit to Accra will be a central highlight of the West African leg of the tour. Ghana, with its stable political environment and growing influence in digital innovation and finance, is viewed as a critical partner in London’s efforts to expand business and trade collaborations.

Mayor Khan is expected to engage with Ghanaian political and business leaders, visit tech hubs, and participate in dialogues with members of the African diaspora and youth entrepreneurs.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Mayor Khan said, “Lagos, Accra, Johannesburg and Cape Town; These will be my stops later this month on the first trade mission to Africa by a Mayor of London.

“With growing populations, rapidly advancing tech ecosystems and an appetite for stronger economic ties, this mission presents an exciting opportunity for mutual investment and growth.”

The announcement of the trip comes just days after Khan visited The Flygerians, a popular Nigerian-owned restaurant in Peckham, London, where he acknowledged the entrepreneurial contributions of the African diaspora to the UK’s economy.

Ghanaian officials have welcomed the visit, viewing it as a chance to showcase Accra’s role as a regional hub for innovation, creativity, and development.

It is expected that during the stop in Accra, discussions will revolve around bilateral investment opportunities, support for the creative arts sector, and sustainable urban development.

The broader UK-Africa outreach is part of London’s post-Brexit global positioning, aimed at moving beyond traditional European partners to forge stronger alliances with emerging markets.

The African mission builds on existing diaspora ties—Ghana alone is home to one of the UK’s most vibrant African communities.

In South Africa, where Khan will conclude his tour, the focus will shift toward climate resilience and green investment. Johannesburg and Cape Town, known for their innovation and city development projects, are expected to engage with London on sustainability policies and urban transformation.

Ultimately, Mayor Khan’s trade mission signals a new chapter in UK-Africa relations, particularly at the city-to-city level, where urban partnerships are becoming pivotal for investment, policy exchange, and shared prosperity.
