President John Dramani Mahama has been spotted cruising in a regular Volkswagen ID Buzz, against the traditional presidential convoy.
This unusual mode of transportation has sparked a heated debate among Ghanaians, with some praising his humility and others criticizing his lack of security awareness.
The video, which has gone viral, shows President Mahama arriving at a private event in the front seat of the VW ID Buzz, dressed in a simple white long-sleeve shirt and trousers.
He was accompanied by a few associates, also dressed in white.
Many who saw the video were taken aback by the president’s decision to forgo the usual heavy security and convoy.
This is not the first time President Mahama’s transportation choices have raised eyebrows.
Previously, a high-end Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 Edition, worth over GHC8 million, was seen at an event, sparking speculation about its ownership.
The NDC’s Deputy Communications Officer, Eric Adjei, later denied claims that the vehicle belonged to the president, stating that it was actually Ibrahim Mahama’s personal car.
President Mahama’s decision to shun the traditional presidential convoy has been met with mixed reactions. While some have praised his humility and willingness to connect with ordinary Ghanaians, others have expressed concerns about his safety and security and the unnecessary populist antics.
Critics argue that a sitting president should not move without proper protection, given the potential risks and threats.
