Mahama Promises Teachers Accommodation, 20% Allowances

In a bid to boost education in rural areas, President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to introduce a 20% allowance for teachers serving in these communities.

This announcement was made during his State of the Nation Address (#SONA2025) in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

The allowance aims to motivate teachers to accept and remain at their posts in underserved communities.

According to President Mahama, district assemblies will be responsible for monitoring the scheme to ensure teachers remain at their designated posts.

This move is expected to improve education in rural areas, which have historically been underserved.

In addition to the allowance, President Mahama also announced plans to construct teacher accommodation units in rural areas under the Teacher Dabre Initiative.

“No new school will be built without teachers’ accommodation,” he emphasized, highlighting the importance of teacher welfare in improving education across the country.

This promise is not new, however. During the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto launch, President John Mahama had promised a 20% basic salary special allowance for teachers and health workers who accept postings to rural areas.
