Mahama Salutes Bawumia’s Sportsmanship In Conceding Defeat

President John Dramani Mahama has praised his main challenger in the 2024 presidential election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his swift concession of defeat.

President Mahama revealed that he was asleep when Dr Mahamudu Bawumia called to congratulate him on his victory, expressing his astonishment at the swift conclusion of the election.

President Mahama recounted the moment he received the concession call from Bawumia, saying he was woken up and asked to speak with his “brother,” the Vice President.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia congratulated Mahama on his victory, stating that he had fought a good fight and that the people of Ghana had spoken.

The concession marked the end of a highly competitive election, with Bawumia acknowledging the provisional election results and expressing his commitment to a peaceful transition of power.

President John Mahama secured 56.55% of the vote, while Bawumia received 43.45%.

President John Mahama’s victory marked his return to the presidency, having previously served from 2012 to 2017.

He is the first president in Ghanaian history to be democratically elected to a non-consecutive second term.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession was seen as a demonstration of political maturity and a commitment to Ghana’s democratic values.

Mahama stressed the importance of unity and collaboration in the days ahead, thanking Bawumia for his commitment to a peaceful transition of power.

Ghanaians praised Dr Bawumia for his sportsmanship in accepting defeat, with many taking to social media to commend his actions.

President John Mahama’s comments came during a fellowship meeting with members of the clergy in Kumasi, where he expressed his surprise at the outcome of the election and praised Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession.
