In a historic ceremony held at Rideau Hall, Canada’s nation’s capital, Mark Carney was officially sworn in as the country’s new Prime Minister on March 14, 2025.
This milestone event marked the beginning of a new era in Canadian politics, with Carney succeeding Justin Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party and the country.
The swearing-in ceremony was a formal affair, with Carney pledging his allegiance to King Charles III, along with his heirs and successors.
Following the ceremony, ministers took the oath of office to form the new cabinet.
In a brief statement to reporters, Carney emphasized his administration’s readiness to take immediate action, stating, “We’re going to get straight to work.”
Carney’s appointment as Prime Minister comes after a landslide victory in the Liberal Party leadership election, which took place over the weekend.
This victory positioned him as Trudeau’s successor in leading both the party and the country.
Trudeau, who had announced his resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party on January 6, 2025, expressed gratitude to Canadians in his farewell address, saying, “Thank you for trusting me, for challenging me”.
