Major General William Agyapong has officially assumed the role of Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), taking on the critical responsibility of guiding the strategic vision and operational leadership of the military.
His appointment comes at a time when national security is paramount, with evolving security challenges both within and beyond the country’s borders.
The handing-over ceremony, held at Burma Camp, marked a significant transition in the leadership of the GAF.
In a formal transfer of authority, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah passed the baton of command to Major General Agyapong, the first Commander of Operation Vanguard, the anti galamsey operation.
Interesting he is going to preside over the military operation in the current deployment of soldiers to fight the galamsey menace.
Generak Agyapong who was then a Colonel could not succeed in rooting out galamsey and later handed over to Colonel Ayisi.
General Oppong-Peprah, who previously held the role of CDS, expressed gratitude to the personnel of the GAF for their unwavering loyalty and professionalism throughout his tenure.
He also encouraged all security agencies to maintain effective collaboration, fostering peace and security not only within Ghana but also in the region.
General Oppong-Peprah took the opportunity to wish Major General Agyapong success in his new role, emphasizing the continuity of the armed forces’ mission to protect the country and ensure its stability.
Commitment To National Security
In his inaugural address, Major General Agyapong who has just been decorated from Brigadier General reaffirmed his full commitment to the mission of the Ghana Armed Forces.
His focus is set on enhancing the military’s operational readiness, reinforcing its capabilities, and addressing emerging security threats both within the country and beyond.
The new CDS expressed his determination to work closely with other security agencies to ensure the country remains secure and stable in the face of both traditional and unconventional security challenges.
Major General Agyapong’s leadership will be marked by a focus on strengthening the Ghana Armed Forces and adapting to the changing nature of global security.
He pledged to uphold the values of the military while prioritizing the safety of all Ghanaians.
