NIB Chases Akwatia MP

A dramatic scene unfolded in Akwatia, Eastern Region, as operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) attempted to arrest Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, on Friday, March 7, 2025.

The NIB team, who arrived at the NPP Akwatia office in three vehicles, allegedly pulled a sidearm in an effort to compel the MP to comply with their orders and accompany them to the NIB office in Accra.

The NIB operatives were met with fierce resistance from supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who were present at the office.

The party members stood their ground, refusing to allow the operatives to take Mr. Kumi into custody.

The situation became tense, with the operatives eventually fleeing the scene, empty-handed.

Prior to the attempted arrest, Mr. Kumi had participated in Friday Muslim prayers with members of the Muslim community in his constituency.

It is reported that he had told the NIB operatives that he would voluntarily present himself to the NIB office if his presence was genuinely required.

However, the operatives allegedly insisted on taking him into custody, leading to the confrontation with the NPP supporters.

The incident has heightened tensions in the constituency, with party members demanding clarity on the reasons behind the attempted arrest.

The NIB has not yet released a statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest.

The incident has raised concerns about the use of force by law enforcement agencies and the need for greater transparency in their operations.

The Akwatia constituency has been a stronghold of the NPP, and the attempted arrest of their MP has sparked outrage among party supporters.
