The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has categorically denied allegations that he has hired a vigilante group to combat illegal mining (galamsey) and restore the Birim River.
Speaking at his palace in Kyebi, Eastern Region, the Okyenhene clarified that a dedicated task force, comprising chiefs, opinion leaders, mining experts, and relevant security agencies, has been established to tackle the issue and mitigate the devastating effects of galamsey in the region.
The Okyenhene’s denial comes amidst growing concerns about the environmental degradation caused by galamsey in the Region.
The Birim River, which is a major source of water for the region, has been severely polluted by the activities of illegal miners.
The Okyenhene’s task force is aimed at removing excavators and other machines used to destroy the environment and ensuring that only individuals and businesses with proper documentation from the Minerals Commission are permitted to engage in mining.
The task force is a joint effort between Okyenman and Okuapeman to fight illegal mining and restore water bodies in the Eastern Region.
Barima Dr. Kwabena Awuah Parker, Chief of Sokode-Juaso and leader of the task force, has called on the government, corporate institutions, NGOs, and especially the youth, to support the task force in its mission to protect the environment for sustainable development.
The Okyenhene’s efforts to combat galamsey have been recognized by President Akufo-Addo, who commended him for his tireless efforts in combating environmental degradation.
The Okyenhene’s leadership in advocating for the preservation of Ghana’s environment is a testament to his commitment to protecting the natural resources of the country.
In a significant display of unity, the Okyenhene and Oseadeyo Kwasi Akuffo, Okuapehene, have joined forces to eliminate illegal mining along the banks of the Birim River.
Their collaboration seeks not only to restore the river and safeguard the environment but also to strengthen ties between the two traditional councils in the fight against environmental destruction.
