Parliament Appoints Committee Leaders

The Parliament of Ghana has taken a significant step towards enhancing its oversight role by appointing leaders to its various committees.

This move is expected to intensify deliberations on key national issues, including the review of government expenditures, policy proposals, and legislative reforms.

The appointments demonstrate Parliament’s commitment to strengthening oversight and ensuring that national resources are managed effectively for sustainable development.

Some of the key committees include Finance, Health, Defence and Interior, Education, Public Accounts, Budget, and Subsidiary Legislation.

The Finance Committee, chaired by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, will shape discussions on the national budget, tax policies, and financial regulations.

The Health Committee, led by NDC MP for Nabdam, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, will focus on healthcare policies and programs.

Other notable appointments include the Defence and Interior Committee, chaired by NDC MP for Builsa North, James Agalga, and the Education Committee, led by NDC MP for Akatsi North, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe.

The Public Accounts Committee, chaired by New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Atiwa East, Abena Osei-Asare, will scrutinize the government’s financial management.

The appointments also include leaders for the Budget Committee, Committee on Subsidiary Legislation, Committees on Ways and Means, and Back Benchers Business.

These committees will play crucial roles in shaping Ghana’s development agenda and ensuring transparency and accountability in governance.

The appointment of opposition MPs to chair key committees, such as the Public Accounts Committee, is a welcome move towards promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

This tradition is rooted in the committee’s mandate to examine the Auditor-General’s report on the country’s public accounts.
