After months of stalled progress, the Ofankor-Nsawam road project is set to resume in the next few days, as Roads Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza confirmed that Maripoma Limited, the contractor behind the project, will return to the site.
This follows a successful resolution of a long-standing financial dispute, where the contractor abandoned the site due to an outstanding debt of $45 million owed by the government.
The announcement, made during a press conference on April 2, 2025, brought much-needed relief to frustrated commuters and residents who have endured poor road conditions along the crucial stretch.
The Ofankor-Nsawam road, a key link between Accra and Nsawam, had long been plagued with delays, and the recent halt in work had only added to the hardships of those who rely on the road for daily commuting.
Resumption of Work
The Minister, on an inspection tour, addressed the media with optimism, detailing the breakthrough in negotiations that has paved the way for work to resume.
“We’ve been having discussions with the contractor, and I am pleased to inform the public that we have concluded. Effective immediately, the contractor will mobilize to the site and begin work,” Agbodza confirmed, offering a clear timeline for the project’s next steps.
He indicated that within three days, construction teams would begin the remobilization process, signaling the project’s return to life after the extended delay.
The announcement was met with a sense of relief, especially for the thousands of commuters and residents who have long faced the challenges of poor road conditions, traffic congestion, and accidents on the road.
The Ofankor-Nsawam highway serves as a vital route for travelers, connecting major urban centers, and facilitating trade and commerce. The project’s delay had significant socio-economic implications for the region.
“The government is fully aware of the situation, and we deeply feel the pain of residents and commuters, and that help is on the way,” Agbodza added, acknowledging the government’s awareness of the difficulties the stalled road project has caused for those who depend on the road daily.
Contractor’s Commitment
Following months of financial disputes between the government and Maripoma Limited, which had caused the contractor to abandon the project site, the Roads Minister emphasized that the contractor had now agreed to resume work without further delay.
“I expect Maripoma to start re-mobilizing to the site immediately. And within 3 days, we should see action towards completing that project,” Agbodza stated, underlining the urgency of completing the roadworks.
The Ofankor-Nsawam road has faced several delays since its commencement. One of the significant setbacks was the financial dispute, with the contractor demanding payment for work completed, which had not been paid due to budgetary constraints.
Kwame Agbodza acknowledged that the situation had become increasingly frustrating for all stakeholders involved, particularly for the communities directly affected by the stalled project.
Despite the setbacks, the minister reassured the public that the government is committed to ensuring the completion of the road.
“I stand with the contractor and the public in seeing this critical road infrastructure project through to the end. We are doing everything we can to ensure this project is completed,” he said.
